Curbing & driveways will continue to be poured throughout the project limits. Thank you for your continued patience.

The base course of asphalt will be complete between 1st Ave and 3rd Ave this week. That section of the road will be opened for traffic on Monday (12-23).
The block between College Ave and Stadium Ave is closed. Curbing is being poured in this stretch. The roadway will be removed over the next couple of weeks and the asphalt will be placed prior to EAC re-opening classes in January. That block will likely be opened to traffic the second week of January.
Driveways and sidewalk all along the north side of the project will continue over the next few weeks.
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
Update – November 26th:
Beginning MONDAY, December 2nd, Church Street will be closed between 1st Avenue and 3rd Avenue. This will be a “hard” closure at 1st Avenue (no traffic allowed through) and a “soft” closure at 2nd Avenue and 3rd Avenue (closed to all but those living in the closed section). This closure will last up to three weeks while the old road is removed and the new road is constructed in this section. Driveways will be poured between 1st Ave and 3rd Ave during this time also. Residents are asked to park their vehicles on the opposite side of the street when their driveways are being constructed.
Update – November 19th: The base course of asphalt has been completed between 1st Avenue and Allred Lane and the road is re-opened. A final course of asphalt will be placed in the coming months. Starting today (Tuesday, November 19th), concrete curbs are being poured on the North side of Church Street between 1st Avenue and High School Avenue. Driveways and intersections will then be poured in this section. Residents may have to park their vehicles on the opposite side of the street when their driveways are being constructed. Once the curbs and driveways are complete in this area, the road will be removed and replaced. This work will start at 1st avenue and continue west. Road closures will happen as the road is being re-constructed
Update – November 7th:
Church Street remains closed, except to residents, between Allred Lane and 1st Avenue. The street has been excavated and the road base is being constructed. Road base construction will continue through next week (week of Nov. 11th) and will then be paved. Graham County Co-op had to replace a portion of their gas main earlier in the week, resulting in temporary closure of 1st Avenue. That work is now complete and they assure us they will not be doing any more work in that intersection. Beginning next week (week of Nov. 11th), concrete curbs will be poured on the North side of Church Street between 1st Avenue and High School Avenue. Driveways and intersections will then be poured in this section.
Week of October 28th:
Church Street will be closed between 1st Avenue and Allred Lane, beginning October 29th and lasting approximately three weeks. There will be a “hard” closure at Allred Lane (no traffic permitted to pass) and a “soft” closure at 1st Avenue (closed to all but local traffic). There will be a significant amount of road work in this section, including removing all of the existing asphalt, preparing the road base and placing new asphalt.
There was not good communication on Tuesday the 29th, resulting in school buses not accessing the Diamond Springs area and kids getting dropped off in a different location. We apologize for this. The Town is coordinating with the Contractor and the School to ensure normal bus routes can be run throughout the course of the closure (beginning Wednesday Oct. 30th). There may be disruption to bus service the day the new road is paved, but we will coordinate with the school and get that information out in advance.
The morning of Wednesday, October 30th, Graham County Utilities will be re-locating a gas line between 1st Ave and the West entrance to Diamond Springs. The road will be closed for a few hours that morning to allow for that work. Flaggers will be present on the job to route traffic through the Marriott hotel parking lot. This work is schedule to be completed before the bus runs in the afternoon.
We realize the inconvenience placed on residents of church street and others in the community. We will do our best to minimize the negative impacts and appreciate your courtesy and patience through this project.
The construction of the Church Street project is well underway. We appreciate your continued patience as we work to improve this road. Roadway construction is scheduled to be finalized by February of 2020. The construction will include all new curb, gutter, sidewalks and asphalt from Stadium Ave to Highway 70. Traffic calming devices are also part of the project, including a round-about at the intersection of 3rd Ave. We ask that everyone SLOW DOWN in the construction zone and take alternative routes where possible to reduce congestion and traffic in the work zone.
